Aftercare and general wound care at the
Dragon and Butterfly   Piercing (902) 434-4199

Each client is given a page of aftercare instruction appropriate to their piercing.(click to see example) However  in general  the  most important factor for healing is good hygiene and the use of proper wound dressings such as BAND-AID Advanced Healing bandage. Don't play with it, don't move the jewelry through the pierced area and Keep it Clean!  Wash  with soap and warm (37deg C) tap or bottled water then rinse away all the soap. Do not allow soap to enter the wound.  Or clean with an Antimicrobial Wound Cleanser.
Why Salt  Salt Sprays are Bad for You!
Aerosol sprays
are normally at room  temperature (20deg C) as the spray is released it tends cool, so that the spray hitting your skin is normally less than room temperature.  Since your body heals best at 37deg C or higher, cooling your skin to 17deg C less than the minimum optimal healing temperature will delay healing. The salt in the spray will tend to dry out and harden your skin and further delay healing.

Where the Myth of Salt  and Salt Soaks Comes From

If one has a deep traumatic wound, such as that inflicted by shell fragments in war or  a compound fracture (where the broken bone sticks out through the skin) before closing the wound medical staff will clean or irrigate it with a warm "normal saline" solution to wash away any foreign matter that may have entered the wound . A normal saline solution is 3-5mls
(a small teaspoon) of pure salt  to one litre of sterilized water (not table salt which has sugar and  is iodized). Once the wound is closed and covered the area can be cleaned with Antimicrobial Wound Cleanser or soap and water at 37deg C or higher when dressings are changed. Some poorly trained piercers have mistakenly extrapolated from this that one should put salt water on a piercing.
Any Salt is a compound of Sodium and Chlorine. Sometimes  people believe that for a piercing you should use salt soaks  and  avoid chlorine !  As salt can not be separated from chlorine this is totally impossible. If you soak in salt you also
inevitably soak in chlorine.

You do not have a deep traumatic wound!!
Hoops are a bad Idea in a new Belly Button Piercing because they can turn putting harmful Bacteria into the wound.
Metal cannot stick to flesh, so moving jewelry through a wound simply disturbs the wound and introduces bacteria.

To sum up.  Just wash the pierced area daily with soap and warm water, keep it covered when ever possible, do not change the jewelry sooner than advised, do not touch without washing your hands first. And all will be well.

Below is an Extract from Vancouver Island Health authority Patient and Family Education Resources – Appendix I

  • Because wound healing takes place at body temperature, the fewer times the dressing is changed, the more constant the temperature remains. Each time the wound is exposed for dressing change, it takes 6-8 hours to return to body temperature.

• Because they are made to last longer (Advanced wound dressings such as
BAND-AID Advanced Healing bandage), the change process is needed less often. Dressings that keep wounds moist are usually removed with less pain and are usually more comfortable when in place.
